چکیده

We found high molecular fractions ( fmol; ratio of the molecular to total gas surface densities) in three of five Virgo spiral galaxies in spite of their low total gas column density, based on 12CO(J = 1−0) observations with the Nobeyama 45 m telescope equipped with a multi-beam receiver, BEARS. We interpret this as a result of environmental effects. Combining the CO data with HI data, the relationship between the surface density of the total gas (HI plus H2) and fmol indicates that the three galaxies near the cluster center have larger fmol values than expected for field galaxies, while the others show normal fmol. The large fmol is interpreted as being due either to effective HI gas stripping, even in the inner disks, or to large ISM pressure induced by the high ICM pressure and/or ram pressure, although the possibility of an unusually high metallicity cannot be ruled out. Decoupled Nuclei in the Spiral Galaxies NGC 4216 and NGC 4501

Received ; accepted – 2 – ABSTRACT By using bidimensional spectral data obtained at the 6m telescope for the Virgo spirals NGC 4216 and NGC 4501, we have found chemically distinct metal-rich nuclei in these galaxies. Under the assumption of equal ages for the nuclear and bulge stellar populations, the metallicity difference between the nuclei and their environments in the galaxies is estimated ...

Spiral Structure and the Stability of Stellar Disks

The generation of transient spiral waves by swing-ampliication in self-gravitating disks is now regarded as the underlying reason for the predominance of spiral patterns in galaxies. The physics of this process is well understood and should be readily applicable to gaseous accretion disks. There is less agreement on a mechanism for the maintenance of long-lived spirals, or the continuous regene...

Environmental Effects on the Kinematics of Virgo Cluster

We present results from an ongoing survey dedicated to the ionized gas kinematics of Virgo cluster spiral galaxies using Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometry. Our goal is to study the environmental effects on galaxy evolution in the Virgo cluster. We report here on the Hα distribution map and velocity field of NGC 4438, the prototype of an interacting galaxy near the centre of the cluster. 1. Introd...

The relationship between gas content and star formation rate in spiral galaxies . Comparing the local field with the Virgo cluster

Context. Despite many studies of the star formation in spiral galaxies, a complete and coherent understanding of the physical processes that regulate the birth of stars has not yet been achieved, nor a unanimous consent was reached, despite the many attempts, on the effects of the environment on the star formation in galaxies member of rich clusters. Aims. We focus on the local and global Schmi...

Gaseous Disks of Spiral Galaxies: Arms and Rings

An improved linear stability theory of small-amplitude oscillations of a self-gravitating, infinitesimally thin gaseous disk of spiral galaxies has been developed. It was shown that in the differentially rotating disks for nonaxisymmetric perturbations Toomre’s modified critical Q-parameter is larger than the standard one. We use hydrodynamical simulations to test the validity of the modified l...
